I'm Brian Wilder, and I help buyers and sellers in Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties. This page covers how Port Salerno works so you can search with the right questions.
Port Salerno is in eastern Martin County. It is bordered to the north by the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon, to the east by a branch known as Great Pocket, to the northwest by Manatee Pocket and to the southwest by U.S. Route 1, about 5 miles southeast of Stuart and 8 miles northwest of Hobe Sound (Wikipedia, Port Salerno, Florida). The population was 10,401 at the 2020 census (Wikipedia).
A small settlement formed there in the 1920s and was named Salerno for its resemblance to the Italian city. Early settlers were fishermen who lived along the banks of the Manatee Pocket, and some families have owned land there for over 100 years (Wikipedia). The name became Port Salerno in 1960.
The Manatee Pocket is a small natural bay in the St. Lucie River, and much of the community's character comes from the working waterfront around it. Homes on or near the water carry different costs from homes inland.
For any home near the water, ask whether it is on the water, what the seawall and dock look like, and what the flood zone and elevation are.
Because the community is bordered by water on several sides, flood and wind questions come first.
Our Florida homeowners insurance guide (palmbeachcountyhomeforsale.com/blog/florida-homeowners-insurance-2026-palm-beach-county) explains how to read the reports behind the quote.
Our free buyer guide walks through each item in order, so you know what to ask before you tour.
If Port Salerno is not quite right, compare Stuart (palmbeachcountyhomeforsale.com/stuarthomesforsale) and Hobe Sound (palmbeachcountyhomeforsale.com/hobesoundhomesforsale). Each has a different mix of waterfront, golf and mainland neighborhoods.

It depends on what you want. Port Salerno is a small waterfront community on the Manatee Pocket between Stuart and Hobe Sound. Check the flood zone, the seawall and the insurance quote before you decide.
Port Salerno is in eastern Martin County, about 5 miles southeast of Stuart and 8 miles northwest of Hobe Sound, along the Manatee Pocket.
It is a small natural bay in the St. Lucie River, and early Port Salerno settlers fished along its banks. Homes on or near it need a flood, seawall and insurance check like any waterfront property.
The price of the home is only part of the cost. Insurance, flood coverage, association fees and taxes change the monthly total a lot from one address to the next. Ask for each of those numbers on the exact property before you offer.
If you use a federally backed mortgage on a home in a FEMA high-risk flood zone, your lender will require it. Cash buyers are not required to carry it, but the risk is the same. Get a flood quote on the exact address before your inspection period ends.
I cannot tell you where the market goes next, and nobody honestly can. What I can do is help you test the purchase against your budget, your insurance quote, your association costs and how long you plan to stay.
