Wellington’s Golf Cart Ordinance: Where You Can Go, Who Can Drive, and What Gets You Fined
Wellington’s Golf Cart Ordinance has been in effect since March 28, 2022. But most residents — and many buyers — don’t know what it actually says about designated roads, age rules, night driving, equestrian trails, and HOA streets.
Wellington’s Golf Cart Ordinance (effective March 28, 2022) allows golf cart operation on designated municipal streets and multimodal pathways. Drivers 18+ need a valid government ID. Drivers under 18 need a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit. Golf carts are NOT allowed on streets with speed limits of 30 mph or higher, on equestrian trails, or on any road not specifically designated. The ordinance does NOT regulate golf cart use within gated communities or on private property — those are governed by community rules.
One of the most common questions I get from buyers considering Wellington — especially those coming from golf cart communities in other parts of Florida — is whether you can drive a golf cart around town. The answer is yes, with specific rules. Here’s what the ordinance actually says.
Where Golf Carts Are Allowed
Wellington designates specific streets for golf cart use under its ordinance. Golf carts may operate on designated Wellington roads and multimodal pathways where signage indicates authorization. Not allowed: streets with posted speed limits of 30 mph or higher, equestrian trails, or any road not specifically designated by ordinance.
Importantly, the Wellington Golf Cart Ordinance does NOT regulate use within gated communities or on private property (including retail parking lots and private roads). Those areas are governed by community rules, not this ordinance. So if you live in a gated Wellington community with internal golf cart paths, your community’s rules apply — not the village ordinance.
Who Can Drive
18 and older: Valid government-issued photo ID required. Driver’s license not required for on-road operation on designated streets.
Under 18: Must have a valid driver’s license or learner’s driver’s license to operate a golf cart on any designated Wellington road or multimodal pathway.
In other words, a 16-year-old with a learner’s permit can legally operate a golf cart on designated Wellington streets. A 17-year-old without any license cannot.
Night Driving and Equipment
Golf carts may be driven from sunrise to sunset without additional equipment requirements. After sunset, the cart must be equipped with nighttime safety equipment: headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and a windshield.
Golf carts also cannot carry more passengers than the number of available seats. Passengers must be safely seated at all times — no standing, no lap-sitting.
Violations and Fines
Violations of the Wellington Golf Cart Ordinance are enforced by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office via civil citation. Fine amounts are established in the ordinance. Violations may also be enforced through the issuance of a Uniform Traffic Citation, which carries additional penalties.
For buyers: if you’re purchasing in Wellington specifically because you want golf cart access to shops, parks, or the equestrian venues, verify the specific streets near your prospective home are designated. Not all Wellington streets are on the approved route map.
