Palm Beach County Traffic and Road Infrastructure — What Residents and Buyers Should Know
Palm Beach County’s road network is under significant pressure from continued population growth. The county and FDOT are investing heavily in improvements — but some of the most congested corridors directly affect Wellington’s daily commuters.

Palm Beach County’s population has grown to approximately 1.5 million people since 1990, and the road network has not kept pace. The County Engineer’s Office reports that more than 200 miles of major highways and 50 significant intersections are either at or near capacity. The highest concentration of congestion is west of Military Trail — exactly where Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, and the western communities are located. The county and FDOT are investing hundreds of millions of dollars in improvements, but the backlog is substantial.
Congested Road Segments Affecting Wellington Residents
Several of the county’s most congested road segments are the primary routes Wellington residents use daily:
- Southern Boulevard: From Forest Hill Boulevard to the Turnpike — one of Wellington’s primary east-west connections to I-95 and downtown West Palm Beach; consistently cited as one of the county’s most congested segments
- Okeechobee Boulevard: From Lyons Road to the Turnpike — another major Wellington-area east-west corridor
- Northlake Boulevard: From Seminole Pratt Whitney Road to Coconut Boulevard — northern access corridor for Acreage and Loxahatchee residents
- Indiantown Road: From Jupiter Farms to I-95
- Atlantic Avenue: From State Road 7 to Jog Road
- Lyons Road: From Boynton Beach Boulevard to Hypoluxo Road

Busiest Intersections in the County
Based on traffic counts from the County Engineer’s Office, the intersection of Okeechobee Boulevard and Jog Road is among the busiest in Palm Beach County, with approximately 8,964 vehicles during morning rush hour and 8,573 during the afternoon. Motorists regularly miss multiple traffic light cycles at peak hours.
Other heavily trafficked intersections include:
- Forest Hill Boulevard and Haverhill Boulevard: approximately 8,433 vehicles in the afternoon
- PGA Boulevard and Military Trail: approximately 7,469 vehicles in the afternoon; 7,318 in the morning
- Woolbright Road and Congress Avenue: approximately 7,544 vehicles in the afternoon
What the County Is Doing About It
Palm Beach County and FDOT are implementing several approaches to address congestion:
- Smart traffic signals: Sensor-based traffic signal technology is being deployed along Hood Road in Palm Beach Gardens to monitor traffic volume and speed and adjust signal timing dynamically; this technology is expected to expand to other corridors
- Road capacity investments: Hundreds of millions of dollars in road improvements are planned over a multi-year timeline; specific projects and their status are tracked by the County Engineer and FDOT
- Longer-term approaches under discussion: Transportation engineers nationally, including James Moore of the University of Southern California, have argued that adding road capacity alone tends to attract additional traffic and that demand-management strategies such as congestion pricing may ultimately be necessary

Traffic is one of the most consistent quality-of-life concerns among Palm Beach County residents, and it’s a real factor in housing decisions. Wellington buyers frequently ask about commute times to downtown WPB, PBI Airport, and employment centers along the I-95 corridor. The honest answer is that Southern Boulevard and Okeechobee Boulevard are congested at peak hours, and that condition is likely to persist even with ongoing improvements given the pace of population growth. Understanding the real commute picture — not just the map distance — is part of making a well-informed decision about where to live in Palm Beach County.
