Wellington’s Two High Schools: The Foundation

Wellington is served by two public high schools within the community:

• Wellington High School (2101 Greenview Shores Blvd, established 1988) — enrollment approximately 2,760, A-rated
• Palm Beach Central High School (8499 W Forest Hill Blvd, opened 2003) — enrollment approximately 2,841, rated

Both are within the Village of Wellington. Both serve the core Wellington residential market and are the primary reason families cite school access when choosing Wellington specifically over Royal Palm Beach, the Acreage, or Westlake.

Dr. Joaquín García High School: What It Is

Dr. Joaquín García High School opened in August 2023 in Lake Worth (not Wellington). It is Palm Beach County’s first new high school since 2005 and the first named after a Hispanic community leader. Dr. Joaquín García was the co-founder of the Hispanic Education Coalition and died in December 2021.

The school was designed to relieve overcrowding at Forest Hill, John I. Leonard, Olympic Heights, Palm Beach Central, Park Vista, and Santaluces high schools. Wellington High was also identified as one of the schools that would provide enrollment to the new school.

The Boundary Controversy: What Happened

Before Dr. García opened, boundary proposals surfaced that would have assigned Wellington-area students to the new school. The Village of Wellington itself pushed back strongly — officials called it an “uproar in Wellington” because the school is located well outside the community and Wellington families specifically chose their addresses for access to Wellington High and Palm Beach Central.

The School Board voted in March 2023 to approve a new boundary map. The final boundaries assigned some Wellington-adjacent areas to Dr. García while protecting the core Wellington subdivisions’ access to Wellington High and Palm Beach Central. Grandfathering provisions allowed current 11th graders and their 9th-grade siblings to remain at their schools.

What Buyers Must Know Before Purchasing

School boundaries in Palm Beach County change. The district has rezoned twice in the past decade. Before purchasing any home with school access as a primary motivation, verify the current boundary at palmbeachschools.org using the boundary map tool.

Do not rely on what the listing agent or a neighbor tells you about school assignment. Do not rely on this article — boundaries can change after publication. The only reliable method is to enter the specific property address into the Palm Beach County School District boundary tool and confirm current assignment directly.

Wellington addresses in the core village generally feed Wellington High or Palm Beach Central. But “Wellington address” does not automatically mean Wellington school district — some addresses on the periphery of the village boundary feed other schools.
